Kendari, a keepsake

The first time I set foot in Kendari, I was engulfed by the heat that I can only compare to the province I grew up in in the Philippines. Only time would've told me that this same heat, the same warmth would be the same feeling I'd receive throughout my stay in this beloved city. I've felt nothing but warmth during my month long stay, it made me question if I was able to reciprocate what they've made me feel. I overthought if everyone who has been so kind felt the same kindness from me. I wish none of them felt disrespected due to my ignorance or fleeting expressions that might've been misunderstood.

Everyone was so kind, I've been handed out so many food for me to try, so many warm smiles that even the language barrier would be ashamed to hinder. I never felt that the language gap made it hard for me to fit in because what lacked in verbal communication, made up with the warmth of their hearts and the kind gestures they've shown. I really wish that I was able to show gratitude, that they knew I was thankful for their hospitality.

The hardest thing to accept about this journey is the reality that I might never visit this place anymore. I wanted to explore more of Indonesia but I doubt the opportunity can ever bring me back specifically here in Kendari. But I dont want to put periods on all that thoughts, as long as I am still young, the urge to go back to Kendari will forever remain.

Short Anecdotes

Toronipa Beach

I specifically enjoyed Toronipa Beach not because it was part of the city tour, but because there were so many of us who went there. It felt like the same culture in my family where extended members all come together to enjoy the beach. While the food wasn't the same that I grew up enjoying to eat in beaches, it felt like home nonetheless because it was made by the hands of people who took so much care in preparing the food and providing us new experiences.

Unofficial Tours

I think if one would summarize this trip for us, you cannot not mention the little unofficial city tours we made from exploring other parts of Kendari in our own time and mingling with locals from visiting little marts and coffee shops. These little trips actually made our stay so much more comfortable because we got to know each other outside academics.

Kendari's History

I was very happy when Ma'am Ade made my request possible by making us visit the museum. I really love museums because it is a collection of historical things preserved to tell the story. I was ecstatic to see so many historical collections that tells so many stories of the Indonesians here in Kendari.

Happy Birthday to me

twenty-third in kendari

This is my second birthday outside the country without my parents, the first being in Thailand during the ASEAN Youth Camp. However, this birthday was specifically special because I am surrounded by people that has grown close to my heart. They also took the time to surprise me with a cake that really touched my heart. My parents are also happy that I am surrounded by people that I've grown attached to to make up for their absence.

Happy 23 years to me!
