School Profile
SMA Negeri 1 Kendari was established on August 1, 1962 and had state status on September 23, 1963. On July 18, 2007, it was designated as one of 200 International Standard Pioneer High School in Indonesia and the first in Southeast Sulawesi. The school’s motto is “Berilmu, Santun, Agamis, Tekun, dan Unggul,” which translates to “Knowledgeable, Polite, Religious, Diligent, and Excellent.”, mirroring its commitment to holistic and academic excellence. It offers education from grade 10 to 12 with a curriculum that includes regular science and social studies tracks as well as accelerated programs for advanced students.
Academic Support System

SMA Negeri 1 Kendari provides various academic facilities to support learning. These include science laboratories, computer rooms, and a library with a collection of academic resources. There are three science labs (for physics, chemistry, and biology) and two computer labs, allowing students to engage in hands-on learning. Additionally, the school provides extracurricular activities like sports and marching band, aimed at fostering students' holistic development.

The school has recently adopted the Merdeka Curriculum (Independent Curriculum), which is designed to provide greater flexibility and a student-centered learning environment. This new curriculum allows teachers to adapt lessons to the needs and interests of their students, encouraging independent thinking and creativity. The Merdeka Curriculum emphasizes competency-based learning and focuses on essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Assessments are now more holistic, with students being evaluated not only through traditional tests but also through projects and active participation in class. This shift aims to create a more engaging and effective learning experience that better prepares students for both higher education and the workforce.
SMA Negeri 1 Kendari’s teaching staff play a vital role in facilitating this independent learning model, ensuring that students receive personalized attention in their academic journey.

Anecdotes
Throughout my stay, I was able to observe the school, classes, and the students. Luckily, I was able to see the students prepare for their P5 or "Projek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila" (Project to Strengthen the Profile of Pancasila Students), a key component of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia. It is where most of their classes are in preparation for their P5 showcase on October 26 with the exception of their elective classes. Each Grade level is assigned a different focus such as entrepreneurship, traditional culture, and sustainable development goals. I was lucky to visit a class wherein they are preparing for their entrepreneurship products such as a rice bowl and an avocado smoothie. I was also able to watch students practice their play following different Indonesian cultural stories such as ‘Raja Ampat’, and ‘Putri Mandalika’. I was also able to befriend some members of the Paskibraka (Pasukan Pengibar Bendera Pusaka) or the Indonesian National Flag Hoisting Troop when they were preparing for their competition.
